We want to have a party, band, booze in city limits?

celebration city
piecies_81 asked:

Ok, me and some friends want to throw a party at his farm, which is on the edge of town, so its still in city limits. Hes building a bar in the barn and we want to have a band outside next to the barn. We need to somehow make money to be able to pay the band, maybe $500-$1000. is there anyway to do this? serve free drinks and take donations or something? The bar is not gonna be open to the public or anything, just friends and family for private partys. Theres plenty of parking space and no neighbors nearby to complain. This will be the same night as the towns annual celebration anyways, so there will be other things going on all day and everyone will be partying. Is there any insurance issues we need to straighten out? do we need a temporary liquor license? How can we make this happen? We are in Iowa.

You need to contact the city government and ask what the laws are. There will probably be issues you need to take care fo with them. You may need to make it officially at least a bring your own party and simply ask ppl to kick in and pay for the band. Don’t know about where you are but that is the way there would be the least problems here. The property owner will have some liability for any accidents or injuries unless ppl sign something releasing him…Might work to take donations for parking or something and hand out admit passes that say by accepting it the person agrees that owner has no liability for accidents or injuries. You’ll need to check. Another issue is that if ppl are drinking the host can be held liable for any harm they do as a result of drinking like DUI accidents. Not trying to rain on your party just some stuff you need to check out for protection of all involved.

First, visit your local police and find out what, if any, permits you need to do this. The barn’s owner may want to pay a visit to his insurance agent & check his insurance coverage, especially liability, since it’s taking place on his property. Also, he shouldn’t forget the implications of any “dram shop” laws that may apply to his situation. Although this appears to be a private party, you say that the hosts want to collect money from their guests. Do it ahead of time; don’t be selling drinks. Then give each attender a set number of drink “tickets”. This may help control cost and also may help control drunkenness (see my remarks about liability above).
Another suggestion: consider including porta-potty rental in your list of costs.
